Educational Philosophy At Art Centre Theatre (ACT), we believe children learn best when they are given ownership of the creative process. Story Drama is more than an acting class—it is an immersive theatrical laboratory where imagination, collaboration, critical thinking, literacy, and artistic exploration converge. Rather than reproducing a favorite story, students learn to analyze it, ask questions about it, expand its world, and ultimately create something entirely their own. Each semester begins with an age-appropriate source of inspiration—a beloved children's book, fairy tale, graphic novel, animated film, television series, mythology, folklore, or other familiar intellectual property. The selected work serves as a creative springboard, allowing students to explore storytelling concepts while honoring the themes, characters, and world of the original material. Through guided dramatic inquiry, collaborative play, design thinking, and creative problem solving, students transform inspiration into original theatrical works that belong entirely to them. The instructor serves not as a director dictating outcomes, but as a teaching artist and facilitator who scaffolds learning, asks thoughtful questions, models creative processes, and empowers students to make artistic decisions. Every voice matters. Every idea has value. Every student contributes to the collaborative creation of the final production. Our process-based curriculum emphasizes imagination over imitation. Children learn that theatre is not simply performing a script—it is writing, designing, inventing, solving problems, communicating ideas, and working together toward a shared artistic vision. Students discover that mistakes are opportunities, experimentation is encouraged, and creativity flourishes when everyone contributes. Through dramatic play, devising techniques, collaborative storytelling, movement, design, and performance, students strengthen literacy, communication, emotional intelligence, executive functioning, artistic confidence, and creative resilience while experiencing the joy of bringing an original production to life.
